Situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 miles from the
coast of Africa, the Canary Islands enjoy a climate that is
reported to be the best in the world. Average temperatures
vary little during the 12 months of the year, peaking at
around 27 degrees in the summer and falling to a low of 21
degrees in the winter.
The most popular winter holiday destination in Europe, The
Canary Islands are Spanish and tourism is the main industry.
The islands offer a wide choice of self catering apartments
and villas, most with pools. English is widely spoken.
There are many apartment blocks and villa developments along
the coastal areas of all the major Canary Islands. Many have
been bought with a view to letting as self catering
accommodation to holidaymakers, resulting in a wide choice
of properties to rent.
Tenerife is the largest of the islands. Triangular in shape
with a dormant volcano, Mount Teide, in the middle of the
island, Tenerife is the most popular winter holiday
destination in Europe with most visitors coming from the UK.
Tourism is concentrated in the south of the island which is
hotter and drier. The north is more lush and cooler.
Mountains separate the two different mini-climates.
In terms of population, Gran Canaria is the largest of the
Canary Islands. Like Tenerife, the island is divided into
two distinct halves: the warmer, drier south separated from
the greener, cooler north by a mountain range. The capital,
Las Palmas, is reputed to be a shopper's paradise.
The most popular beaches (Maspolmas, El Ingles, and Casa de
los Coroneles) are in the south of the islands. The fishing
villages of Puerto Rico, Puerto de Morgan and Pasito Blanco
enjoy picture-postcard scenery and are a 'must' for your
holiday itinerary.
The Canary Islands were formed by volcanic eruptions in the
17th and 18th centuries. Nowhere is this more noticeable
than in Lanzarote where the landscape is black and almost
moon-like. The National Park of Timanfaya includes
spectacular scenery and is a popular tourist choice. The
beaches here are famous for their fine sand.
Fuerteventura is home to the longest beaches in the Canary
Islands. The stretch running between the towns of Pajara and
Jandia offers some 4 miles of golden sand. This area is
popular with divers who can enjoy the spectacular underwater
world.
The three other islands in the Canaries group are less
popular with tourists and there are few hotels or self
catering apartments or villas available. They are, however,
worth a visit if only for the day. The island of La Gomera
is connected to Tenerife by ferry and is home to large
banana plantations. It has small, sandy bays. La Palma, also
known as Green Island because of its lush vegetation and
forests, has a wild landscape, huge waterfalls and tall pine
trees. El Hierro is the smallest of the islands and is
popular with divers.
The reasons the Canary Islands are so popular with European
tourists are not hard to find. The climate is near to
perfect, and the scenery is varied and spectacular. The
islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife in particular enjoy
very different climates and scenery in the north and south
of each island due to the mountain ranges running across
each island. Visitors to the Canary Islands return many
times as each visit results in a different experience.
The Canary Islands are the most popular holiday destination
for in Europe. There is a wide range of

self catering apartments and villas in Lanzarote, Tenerife
and Fuerteventura. The weather is close to perfection and
varies little throughout the year.
